Overview
A Deep Archaeological Journey into Sacred Forests, Carved Rivers, and Lost Jungle Pyramids
While millions of travelers flock to Siem Reap every year to witness the grand stone towers of Angkor Wat, the true magic of the ancient Khmer Empire lies hidden in the surrounding sacred mountains, dense tropical forests, and remote northern plains. The 2-Day Siem Reap Hiking to Kbal Spean Tour is a masterfully designed, active eco-adventure that invites you to step off the heavily trodden temple paths and walk in the footsteps of ancient kings, spiritual pilgrims, and jungle explorers. This high-impact, short-format itinerary beautifully pairs moderate wilderness trekking with profound historical discovery, guiding you through sacred riverbed carvings, intricately detailed pink sandstone temples, a colossal lost pyramid hidden deep in the northern jungle, and the very cradle of Angkorian civilization.
Your trekking odyssey begins with a scenic drive heading north from Siem Reap towards the ancient slopes of the Kulen Hills. Here, you will trade paved roads for single-track dirt trails, embarking on a shady, uphill hike through lush secondary forests and sandstone boulder fields to reach the breathtaking site of Kbal Spean. Popularly known as the "River of a Thousand Lingas," this unique archaeological site features hundreds of intricate Hindu deity figures, symbols, and sacred motifs carved directly into the rocky bed of the Stung Kbal Spean River. Walking along the shaded riverbanks, you will learn how the ancient Khmer people believed the water flowing over these carvings became sanctified before reaching the royal capital. This natural immersion is balanced with a visit to Banteay Srei, the "Citadel of the Women." Built in the 10th century from rare pink sandstone, this architectural jewel boasts the most exquisitely detailed, deep-relief carvings in the entire country, presenting a stark, beautiful contrast to the raw wilderness you explored earlier in the day.
On the second day, the expedition transitions deeper into the wild, northern plains of Cambodia to explore Koh Ker, a former 10th-century capital that was abandoned and swallowed by the jungle for nearly a thousand years. Far removed from the crowds of the main temple park, Koh Ker offers an eerie, mysterious atmosphere that feels like a true archaeological expedition. The highlight of your hike here is Prasat Thom, a colossal, 7-tiered sandstone pyramid rising 36 meters above the jungle canopy, reminiscent of Mayan architecture. You will hike through the surrounding forest to discover crumbling towers wrapped in giant tree roots and hidden forest shrines. Your journey culminates with a walk through the Roluos Group—featuring Bakong, Lolei, and Preah Ko—which represent the earliest brick and stone temples built by the Khmer, offering a profound understanding of how this legendary empire first took root. Led by expert local guides and supported by sustainable travel practices, this 2-day active tour promises an unforgettable adventure through Cambodia’s most sacred and remote landscapes.

Tour Plan
After breakfast at your hotel, we travel to Kbal Spean is an ancient Angkor ruin that is a 90-minute bumpy ride from Siem Reap, on the same route to Banteay Srei. The tarred road ends at Banteay Srei, after which the roads become either very muddy or very dusty, depending on the time of the year. Upon your arrival at the foothills, get ready for another 45 minutes of moderately easy uphill climb. All this for the sake of viewing the carvings of lingas on the riverbed of the Siem Reap River, making it a "river of 1000 lingas". The belief is that the lingas "fertilize" the water that feed the East Baray and irrigates the rice fields. ,,After lunch at local restaurant, we continue to visit Banteay Srei was first rediscovered it was thought to date back to the 13th or 14th century due to its refined carvings. However, inscriptions later found at the site place its consecration very precisely on 22nd of April, 967 A.D. It is the only major temple not to be built by a King. The construction is attributed to Yajnavaraha, a courtier and King’s counsellor. The temple was expanded and further built upon in later years and remained in use until at least the 14th century. Overnight in Siem Reap by your own hotel .
