Overview

A Refreshing Mountain Escape into Cambodia's Pine-Scented Highlands

For travelers seeking a rapid escape from the bustling, high-energy urban environment of Phnom Penh, the 3-Day Phnom Penh Trekking to Kirirom National Park Tour offers the perfect natural antidote. Located just 112 kilometers southwest of the capital in the Phnom Sruoch district of Kampong Speu province, Kirirom National Park—officially named Preah Suramarit-Kossamak Kirirom National Park—stands as a stark and incredibly refreshing geographical contrast to the flat, tropical plains of central Cambodia. Meaning "Mountain of Joy" in the local Khmer language, Kirirom is situated on an elevated plateau rising high above sea level. This unique elevation blesses the park with a wonderfully cool microclimate, misty mornings, and a landscape completely unlike the rest of Cambodia. Here, instead of typical tropical deciduous forests, you will find yourself wandering through vast, fragrant stands of native Cambodian pine trees (Pinus merkusii), open grassy meadows, and deep, rugged jungle gorges that harbor an array of wild flora and fauna.

Your active hiking adventure begins with a scenic drive leaving the capital, transitioning rapidly from paved urban highways into winding mountain roads bordered by dense forests. This tour is intentionally designed to get you off the standard sightseeing paths and directly onto the forest floor. Over the course of three days, you will challenge your body and refresh your spirit by conquering a total of 20 kilometers of diverse trekking trails. On your first day, a gentle 5-kilometer warm-up hike introduces you to the tranquil atmosphere of the pine forests, allowing you to acclimatize to the mountain air. The second day features a comprehensive, fully guided 15-kilometer deep-wilderness trek. This trail leads you through dense primary jungles, past massive volcanic rock formations, along hidden mountain streams, and straight to the edge of spectacular cliffs offering panoramic views of the Cardamom Mountains.

Kirirom is not only a sanctuary of outstanding natural beauty but also a site of rich historical and cultural heritage. During the Golden Age of Cambodia in the 1960s, the park was developed as an elite hill station, and you will walk among the hauntingly beautiful, modernist concrete ruins of King Sihanouk’s former summer villa, which have been slowly reclaimed by the creeping vines of the jungle. You will also experience the natural wonder of Kirirom's cascading waterfalls, where you can swim in crystal-clear pools fed by pure mountain springs. Accompanied by professional, first-aid-certified adventure guides and local indigenous rangers, this short-format trek is the ultimate way to discover Cambodia's wild side. Complete with private support vehicles, comfortable forest lodge accommodations, and hearty local meals, this weekend-friendly itinerary offers a perfectly balanced, low-impact eco-adventure that directly supports forest conservation and local park rangers.

Highlights
