Overview

An Epic Multi-Sport Pilgrimage Through Northern Vietnam's Wild Heart

For travelers who demand raw physical challenges, deep ecological encounters, and authentic cultural immersion, the 14-Day Gorgeous Tour of Bikes and Hikes in Northern Vietnam stands as the ultimate active travel itinerary. This epic adventure completely bypasses the typical tourist packages. Instead, it invites you to explore Northern Vietnam with your own muscle power—crossing legendary mountain passes, pedaling rugged single-tracks, trekking through pristine nature reserves, sleeping in ethnic minority stilt houses, and navigating the emerald waters of Lan Ha and Halong Bay. By combining long-distance cycling and wilderness hiking, this meticulously planned loop offers an intimate, slow-paced look at Vietnam’s most spectacular landscapes and diverse ethnic communities.

Your expedition begins in the historic capital of Hanoi, from which you immediately head west into the dramatic limestone topography of Hoa Binh Province. Your initial base is Da Bac, a pioneering hub for community-based eco-tourism (CBT). Here, you will hike through ancient forests from Ban Sung to the lakeside sanctuary of Da Bia, home to the hospitable Muong ethnic minority. Crossing the vast, island-studded waters of Hoa Binh Lake by traditional boat, you will transition to the high-altitude lands of the Hmong people in Hang Kia. Hiking down from this misty plateau brings you to the lush, green valley of Buoc Village, where the White Thai ethnic group preserves a tranquil, agricultural lifestyle.

Leaving the valleys behind, the journey gets highly active as you ride single-track dirt trails into the globally celebrated Pu Luong Nature Reserve. Renowned for its towering water wheels, cascading rice terraces, and dense jungle peaks, Pu Luong is a hiker's paradise. You will trek to the remote waterfall-side settlement of Hieu Village before pushing forward across rugged trails into the Ngoc Son Ngo Luong Nature Reserve, a hidden gem of primary forests, natural rock pools, and isolated Muong hamlets. The journey continues on foot to Ban Khanh Village, connecting you directly to the boundary of Cuc Phuong National Park—Vietnam’s oldest protected national park and home to ancient old-growth trees and diverse wildlife conservation centers.

Transitioning from trekking back to cycling, you will pedal through the dense tropical forest of Cuc Phuong before riding into the breathtaking landscape of Tam Coc, often called the "Halong Bay on Land" due to its vertical karst towers rising from emerald rice paddies. The final phase of the tour takes you across the rich agricultural plains of the Red River Delta. You will pedal past the historic stone cathedral of Phat Diem, through coastal mangrove forests, and board a ferry to Cat Ba Island. On this dramatic island, you will hike to mountain viewpoints inside Cat Ba National Park, cycle along coastal highways, and kayak through the quiet, cliff-lined waters of Lan Ha Bay. This 14-day multi-sport journey is more than an active holiday; it is a life-changing expedition that directly supports rural communities and preserves the fragile, spectacular environments of Northern Vietnam.
