Overview

A Wild Journey Through Sacred Mountains, Overgrown Ruins, and Ancient Pyramid Empires

For travelers who want to escape the massive tourist crowds of Angkor Wat and immerse themselves in the raw, untamed wilderness of Cambodia, the 2-Day Cambodia Trekking and Camping Tour is the ultimate active expedition. This high-impact, short-format itinerary is crafted specifically for adventurers who wish to combine intense physical trekking, wild outdoor camping, and deep historical discovery. Over the course of just two action-packed days, you will step off the paved tourist roads and hike deep into the thick jungles of Siem Reap Province. You will climb the sacred mountain plateau of Phnom Kulen, explore the mysterious, root-wrapped ruins of Beng Mealea, sleep under a canopy of stars in a remote jungle campsite, and conquer the monumental, Mayan-style pyramid temple complex of Koh Ker.

Your journey begins with a drive heading northeast into the Cambodian countryside, passing traditional stilted wooden homes and green rice paddies before arriving at the foot of Phnom Kulen National Park. Known as the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire, Phnom Kulen is a deeply spiritual mountain rich in archaeological treasures, hidden waterfalls, and sacred rivers. Your first day of trekking covers 12 kilometers of challenging, rewarding terrain. You will hike along shaded forest pathways, navigate sandstone rocks, and discover ancient carvings etched directly into the riverbed at the River of a Thousand Lingas. After cooling off in the refreshing cascades of the sacred Phnom Kulen Waterfall, your trek leads you to the spectacular jungle temple of Beng Mealea. This sprawling 12th-century monument remains completely unrestored, allowing you to hike over collapsed sandstone blocks, scramble over ancient tree roots, and feel like a true explorer. As night falls, you will experience the magic of a remote Cambodian jungle camp, gathering around a crackling campfire to enjoy a freshly cooked Khmer dinner before sleeping in a comfortable, fully equipped safari tent.

On the second day, your trekking boots hit the trail again as you journey further north into the remote forests to explore the legendary Koh Ker Temple Complex. Once a forgotten regional capital of the Khmer Empire in the 10th century, Koh Ker was swallowed by the dense Cambodian jungle for over a thousand years. Today, it stands as one of the most enigmatic and visually striking archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. Your 10-kilometer trek on Day 2 takes you through the quiet, forested park to explore the spectacular seven-tiered pyramid of Prasat Thom, which rises dramatically above the surrounding forest canopy. You will walk along ancient earthen reservoirs, discover hidden sanctuaries covered in vines, and learn about the dark myths surrounding this short-lived capital. This active trekking and camping tour is the ultimate way to support sustainable, community-based eco-tourism in Cambodia while experiencing the wild, ancient heart of the Khmer Empire.
