Overview
Venture Deep into the Highlands of the Phounoi & Akha Oma Tribes
Are you an intrepid explorer seeking a truly raw, authentic cultural experience away from the crowded tourist trails of Southeast Asia? Welcome to Phongsaly, the "Roof of Laos." Perched at high altitudes near the borders of China and Vietnam, this misty, mountainous province is home to a staggering array of distinct ethnic minority communities. Our premium 2-Day Phongsaly Trekking Tour to the Phounoi and Akha Oma Villages offers a rare, highly immersive window into the ancient customs, traditions, and scenic landscapes of Northern Laos.
This meticulously designed eco-trek is crafted for travelers who prioritize genuine human connection, physical adventure, and sustainable tourism. Over two days, you will hike through untouched primary forests, walk along high ridge lines with sweeping mountain vistas, and step into villages that feel suspended in time.
Your journey begins with an excursion to Ban Kormaen, home to a legendary 400-year-old ancient tea plantation. Here, you will stand in the presence of some of the oldest tea trees in Indochina, learn how the local people harvest and process these valuable leaves, and taste the world-renowned organic tea directly with a local family. From there, you will trek on foot to Ban Kordeng, a peaceful village of the Phounoi tribe, before traversing lush jungles and steep ridges to reach Ban Namleng.
Ban Namleng is an isolated settlement of the Akha Oma tribe, a group famous for their stunning, highly intricate hand-woven indigo clothing embellished with vibrant red applique work and elaborate silver headdresses. You will spend an unforgettable night in a traditional wood-and-bamboo homestay, sharing home-cooked jungle food and local stories over an open-fire hearth.
On Day 2, you will actively participate in the daily rhythms of village life. This isn't just a tour; it's an opportunity to join the local people in seasonal highland activities—whether it is foraging for wild edible herbs in the forest, learning traditional cooking techniques, or helping in the mountain fields. Afterward, your trek leads you through rolling green tea gardens and along cool, shaded jungle streams to Ban Borkong, another hospitable Phounoi community, before you return to Phongsaly town.
By booking this community-based tour, you are directly supporting the preservation of these unique tribal cultures and providing vital, ethical economic support to local families and native guides.
